Background

This toll was introduced to stem an increase in traffic since Germany introduced its own HGV toll system in 2005.


Introduced

A law adopted by the French senate on 22 December 2005 introduced the tolls.


Design

The charge is about 0.007euros per kilometre and tonne on trucks over 12 tonnes driving on toll-free segments of the Alsation road network.


Performance

French haulage unions are protesting. (ENDS, 2006). In January 2006, hauliers staged a demonstration involving 230 lorries to draw attention to their campaign.
